Using layers on maps

A layer you have uploaded is available as an overlay on a survey type’s records map. You switch each layer on or off, so you can line your points up against a watershed one moment and a hunt unit the next.

See a boundary on your points

Open a survey type’s records map, then turn on the layer you want from the list of layers. The boundary draws over the map, behind your points, so you can read which records fall inside it. Turn it off when you are done, or switch to another boundary.

Export your records as GeoJSON

Layers bring boundaries into CensusIO. To take your points the other way, into a desktop GIS like QGIS or ArcGIS Pro, export a survey type’s records as GeoJSON. Every record that has a location becomes a map feature carrying its full set of fields, so the export opens with its attribute table intact. You can limit the export to certain review states, for example only approved records.

A layer is context, an export is data

An uploaded layer is a backdrop you view inside CensusIO. A GeoJSON export is your actual records, packaged to open in another tool. They serve opposite directions, so reach for the one that matches what you are trying to do.
