Uploading a layer

You upload a layer once, and it stays available as an overlay for everyone in your organization.

Who can do this

This needs the Member role.

Uploading and removing layers is open to any member who is not a viewer. Viewers can see the layers and their details but cannot add or remove them.

Upload a layer

1. On the Map layers page, find Upload a boundary layer.
2. Enter a Name that will read clearly in the layer list, for example “Watersheds 2024”.
3. Choose a File: a shapefile as a .zip, or a .geojson (or .json) file. The limit is 12 MB.
4. Choose Upload. The layer appears in the Layers list with its feature count, geometry type, file size, and the date you added it.

File formats

• Shapefile. Upload it as a single .zip that contains its parts, at minimum the .shp, .dbf, and .prj. The .prj matters: it tells CensusIO the coordinate system, so the boundary lands in the right place. Your browser reads the zip and converts it before uploading.
• GeoJSON. A single .geojson or .json file holding a feature collection, a feature, or a bare geometry.

Where the file goes

The boundary is converted to GeoJSON and stored as a file for your organization. It is not merged into your survey records; it stays a separate overlay you can switch on, and remove, without touching your data.

Remove a layer

In the Layers list, choose Remove on the layer and confirm. Removing it takes the overlay off your maps. It does not affect any survey records.
